OH, BOY....as I sit here writing this I am thrilled to have the opportunity to taste something as rare and beautiful as an eiswein from 1989. It is not that often that I cross paths with such a wine, but when I do I am absolutely transfixed by what is in my glass.
Eiswein - or ice wine, to those on this side of the pond - are dessert wines made from frozen grapes. Freezing cracks the skins, resulting in grapes that have a higher concentration of sugar. These grapes make dessert wines that are refreshingly clean and strike a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity.

Klostergarten Riesling Eiswein from Mosel, Germany, is a beautiful expression of a Riesling that has fully realized its aging potential. The honeyed nose leads to an ambrosia-like palate redolent of lemon-tinged honey laced with peach and candied apricot, which will linger on the tongue thanks to the long finish. Dessert doesn't get any better than this!
