Where else but Bin Ends can you score yourself a pair of top-rated 2011 Brunellos? We are thrilled to bring you today's Buy the Pair, the 2011 San Filippo Brunello do Montalcino, loved by noted Italian Wine critic James Suckling. Weighing in with a 94 point rating, the 2011 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino sits comfortably among the Top 10 wines of the vintage. It is particularly noteworthy that all but two of the other Brunello selections that Mr. Suckling rated higher were either "Old Vine" or "Single Vineyard Cru" selections selling for as much as twice the $40 net price of today's offer. If you love Brunello, this is a wine you will not want to miss.

San Filippo is located in the splendid area of Northern Montalcino, close to Biondi Santi’s famed "Il Greppo" estate. The Brunello di Montalcino crafted here is age-worthy and elegant, though very approachable in its youth. The property, which lies in the eastern hills around the town of Montalcino, totals 22 hectares,11 of which are under vine. The soils here are clay-based and calcareous, ideal for the cultivation of Sangiovese.

San Filippo was established in 1972 and released its first estate-bottled Brunello di Montalcino with the 1977 vintage. This property, under the guidance of its proprietor Roberto Giannelli, crafts some of the most clean and precise Brunellos in all of Montalcino. The wine is fermented in a blend of stainless steel, wood and cement before being aged for two years in a combination of Slavonian and Allier oak barrique. Its wondrous attributes - expressive, dark fruit, terroir-driven earthiness and tannins - unfold on your palate layer by glorious layer.

James Suckling: 94 Points (Feb 2016)
"Lots of sliced mushroom, dark fruit and some bark. Full-bodied and very ripe, with plum, prune and salt undertones. Chewy firmness. Wonderful backbone of tannins.. Drink now or hold."

The 2011 vintage in Montalcino was a very strong one, with just about every reputable producer crafting a very good quality wine. The advantage to the 2011 vintage for us as consumers, compared to the legendary 2010 vintage, is that these wines are much more approachable today. Possessing plenty of lush, flavorful fruit, balanced acidity and ripe soft tannins, this wines are perfect for any of us who either lack the wine cellar or patience to wait the 8-12 years that the 2010 wines will require before they reach their peak drinkability.

We have purchased all of the remaining inventory on this wine in the marketplace; when we sell out there will not be any more behind it. While we are offering this wine as a "Buy the Pair" feature to make sure that it is accessible to the broadest number of customers possible, this is a wine which you may want to consider purchasing in quantity. Six or more would not be out of the question. Order yours today. CHEERS!!
