If you are a regular reader of these emails, you know that Super Tuscans are among our all-time favorite wines. These magnificent beauties are made from Bordeaux varietals grown in the finest Tuscan soil. Sometimes blended with the native Sangiovese grape, they are varietally correct yet distinctive, exquisite representations of terror that just blow our socks off, Every. Single. Time. Well, it turns out that Bordeaux isn't the only game in town. Tuscan terroir makes magic with Rhône varietals, too, as exquisitely evidenced in today's Buy the Pair, the 2009 Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro Manzano "Il Migliara" Syrah. This Cortona Syrah will make your palate sing - and you will find yourself thinking about this wine long after you drink it!
Tenimenti d'Alessandro is the pioneering winery for Rhône-style wines in Cortona. The d’Alessandro family purchased the 200-acre Manzano farm in 1967 and began experimenting with 10 acres of Syrah in the late 1980s. They followed with an additional 80 acres of Rhône varietals and are now recognized as the benchmark producer of Syrah in Italy. Giuseppe Calabresi, a partner of Massimo d’Alessandro since 2007, acquired the estate in 2015, while his son, Filippo Calabresi, has assumed responsibility in the cellar. **
Cortona sits to the east of Montepulciano, abutting the Apennine mountains in southeastern Tuscany. The winery's north-facing vineyards are located in Manzano, immediately below the hilltop town of Cortona. The mesoclimate of the area is almost identical to that of the Northern Rhône - hot and sunny during the day and cool at night. Cortona earned D.O.C. status in 1999, thanks to the high-quality Syrah produced by Tenimenti d’Alessandro. "Il Migliara" is the winery’s "grand cru" and is both intense and elegant, maintaining its freshness and finesse despite its size. The wine shows off its complexity in multiple layers of dark fruit with accents of game, spice, and flowers.**

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"The 2009 Syrah Migliara is an intriguing wine. Deceptively medium in body, the 2009 graces the palate with expressive, floral-inflected aromas and flavors. Licorice, tobacco, incense and orange peel all introduce an element of exoticism that is highly attractive. As delicious as the 2009 is, it isn't especially varietal. I am curious to see if those nuances develop over time. Overall, this is a fairly delicate, restrained Syrah. Drink 2017-2027" (August 2013)

"Aromas of granite, dried dark fruits and lemon peel follow through to a medium to full body, firm tannins and a licorice, spice aftertaste. Drink or hold." (February 18, 2015)
We only have about 4 cases of the "Il Migliara" in stock. Whether you drink it now or cellar it for a few more years, you are sure to enjoy it immensely. Just make sure you take this opportunity to get it at an incredible price. Cheers!
