For those of you who are unfamiliar with the winery and the wine, the Venge family started out in the wine import business in the19th century. Nils Venge left the family business over 50 years ago and founded a winery bearing the family name in Oakville. He became part of an elite group of talented craftsman credited with establishing the area as a premier fine wine destination. Today, Nils' son Kirk has taken over the reigns and has made his mark in a BIG way. His wines are known for their opulence and lushly concentrated fruit, earning him numerous accolades from the wine press as well as a considerable fan base among wine lovers. Scout's Honor is named after the family's late and beloved Labrador Retriever, Scout, and is a seductive, harmonious blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Charbono and Syrah from old and new vines.
2015 was a spectacular vintage in Calistoga, especially for the varietals in Scout’s Honor. Small berries and a high skin-to-juice ratio resulted in the most densely colored, generously-fruited wine that Venge has seen in decades. Scout’s Honor is made with old-vine Zinfandel from the Signal Fire Vineyard in Calistoga, dry-farmed Petite Sirah, old-vine Charbono and mountain-vineyard Syrah from the Stagecoach Vineyard. The wine was barrel-aged for 14 months in 50% new American Oak, with the balance in once used tight-grain French Oak. Today’s wine has gorgeous aromas of stone fruits, crushed herbs, violets, cherry, anise and honeysuckle. The palate is pure richness from the old-vine Zinfandel, with loads of super-ripe blackberry, pepper, spice and an enveloping masculinity of char and tannins from the Syrah, Charbono and Petite Sirah. It is seamless and mouth-coating deliciousness throughout the palate, with an extra long finish. (from winery notes)
The Scout's Honor is showing spectacularly well right now with a brief decanting and will benefit from 5-8 years of cellar aging. Stock up on 3, 6 or 12 bottles and enjoy is as it evolves over time. Whatever you do, make sure you GET SOME TODAY!
