Bin Ends Notes:

Over the past few months we've been noticing more and more of our clients mention that they don't like Chardonnay. Our hunch is that this is not a dislike of Chardonnay (The finest white grape on earth... Think Montrachet!) but a growing backlash against the unbalanced oak that dominates many (read: most) new world Chardonnay's. Australia and New Zealand have taken the lead with a plethora of unoaked chardonnay. These wines are incredibly pleasing, well balanced and in most cases true to varietal character.

The 2008 Plantagenet "Omrah" from Western Australia is one of the best examples we've seen in some time of this refreshing style. "Fresh" is the best descriptor. The nose might be just a touch on the Sauvignon Blanc side with lots of citrus and grassy notes, but the palate is all Chardonnay and dare I say somewhat Chablis like (blasphemy for Geeks-de-Bourgogne). Clean, fresh and racy acidity dominate, The acidity is all green apple rather than the citrus you would get from a Sauvignon Blanc, in fact the green apple hangs straight through the clean crisp finish.

"Everyone on our panel agreed this had lovely, pure Chardonnay flavors, but we all described them differently: orange and lime-leaf, McIntosh apple or quince and kumquat or bright white peach. It's a bold stroke of flavor, something to catch now while it's young and fresh. The citrus zest character in the finish will clean up after oysters and be great with grilled fish."
