Caution... Wine Rant: Sicily, of all places seems to be going through an identity crisis lately. Correct me if I'm wrong but French is not the traditional language of this Italian (kind of) island, yet it seems that the vast majority of both red and white wines made here are a blend of indigenous Sicilian varietals and FRENCH varietals of all things. Why is this? Sicily is probably one of the most authentic places on earth, why do they feel the need to blend with these alien varietals? Is is that french varietals are vastly superior? Not necessarily, but maybe. Why not mainland Italian varietals? Wouldn't that make more sense? Aglianico, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio or Vernaccia, would seem to make more sense than Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay or Viognier?

Vituculture is not exactly a young industry in Sicily, they've been doing it literally forever and more wine is produced here than almost any other region on the planet. In this we may find their intention. Incredible wine is made in Sicily. With every vintage, awards, points and medals are awarded to the ever growing list of quality producers. These wine really are amazing but there just might be too much of it. A varietal like Grecanico doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. No slight on it's quality, but tossing the word "Chardonnay" onto a wine label might be a marketing attempt. So is marketing the answer? Maybe, but it's really not working. We routinely see wines from Sicily, that "need to be moved out" before the next vintage arrives. Example: I actually saw a few bottles in the bargain bin just this last week that I actually sold to John in our previous lives over 4 years ago. WTF? 4 years? The wine was and is awesome and I bought it myself.

All of this leads us to today's remarkable value. Planeta La Segreta Bianco. A blend of 50% Grecanico, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Viognier, 10% Fiano from arguably Sicily's finest estate. The Planeta estate dates back to the 1600's. In the 1980's the new generation took over, and modernization began. We know the story, it happens everyday... The young ones take over and change everything... modern cellar techniques, better vineyard managments, shiny new labels, the whole bit.

La Segreta Bianco is delicious, it doesn't matter what the varietals are. This is a perfect winter white as with a couple years in bottle the depth, complexity and maturity are peaking now. The wine is rich, as in Chardonnay rich, woven with mineral, candied apple, and lime, melon and citrus from the Grecanico, Viognier and Fiano.

It works. It's a great buy at just $16, but we've taken advantage of the situation and made it a stupendous value for Once Daily. Today only, 200 bottles will sell for just $9.00 per bottle.

So forget the rant, forget the varietals, forget the marketing. If you enjoy a rich full bodied white wine to pair with your Chicken, pork or creamy pasta, then this is it.

Bon Soir Sicilia!
