Are you a big fan of Châteauneuf-du-Pape? If you are anything like me, you have a cellar (or, in my case, a wine dungeon) that features these beautiful wines. Firmly structured and full of brambly fruit, herbs, leather and spice, they need a MINIMUM of 5 to 7 years before they are approachable. They are also quite expensive - at an average of $50 per bottle, my CdP splurges are pretty rare. So, between the cost and the aging time, I only have CdPs on special occasions - no Tuesday night CdP with cheeseburgers for me!

I absolutely LOVE it when we get our hands on southern Rhône reds that are delicious NOW and are reminiscent of youthful CdPs - they have the complex flavors of bright berry fruit tinged with gamy, earthy, spicy notes and DO NOT have that $50 price tag. That's why I have already purchased today's Six-Pack Special, the 2010 Domaine de Chateaumar Côtes du Rhône "Cuvée Batien". This custom cuvée for Bourgeois family Selections is made from 100% old-vine Grenache. A true declassified, CdP, it is "a deep, nearly opaque purple, bringing confident aromas of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry to the nose, with eucalyptus, black pepper, licorice and floral notes. Touches of cinnamon and spice follow onto the medium to full-bodied juicy palate. The tannins are firm, ripe, and well integrated. It all makes for delicious fun." - Importer's notes

So, CdP fans, do what I did: buy this wine, bypass the cellar (dungeon) and enjoy it NOW with your Tuesday night burgers!
