Ok, here is the question. What better bottle of wine is there to celebrate a great meal with a whole clan of family and friends than a "classic" bottle of red wine? Well I'll tell you... It is with a BIG BOTTLE of "classic" red wine. In this particular scenario you cannot go wrong with a magnum of something as special as todays Once Daily Feature: the 2010 Buglioni Amarone della Valpolicella Classico in Magnum.

Many of you are already very familiar with this fabulous small estate located in the Veneto region of Italy just outside of Verona. The properties Valpolicella Classico Ripasso has been one of our top 20 selling wines in the entire store over the last six months. Well if you are one of those folks who have not been able to get enough of the Ripasso than hold onto your hat because today's featured wine takes that Ripasso experience and turns the knob all the way up to 11. 

Established in 1993 by Alfredo Buglioni and his family in the village of Corrubbio di San Pietro, this family run estate consists of 36 hectares of vineyards planted to the regions traditional grape varieties.. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, & Croatina. Their consulting winemaker from the very first vintage is Diego Bertoni.

The winemaking regimen with the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico consists of drying the destemmed grapes from harvest until mid-January at which time they are crushed, pressed, and undergo primary fermentation. The wine is allowed to macerate on it's skins for an extended period of time up to 25 days. After the completion of the malolactic fermentation the wine is aged for 24 months in French barrique and 12 months in bottle prior to it's release to the market.

The finished wine is big, bold, and incredibly complex with layers of various black fruits and a spice box full of exotic flavors such as anise and clove. It is amazing how well this wine carries both the substantial level of tannins and it's roughly 16% level of alcohol.

"Ripe black plum, leather, chocolate and allspice emerge on this big, brooding wine. The densely concentrated palate offers raisin, blackberry extract, licorice, ground pepper and tobacco alongside ripe, velvety tannins and the warmth of alcohol. It closes on a licorice note. Drink through 2022."

"Rich and layered, with juicy acidity and velvety tannins focusing the flavors of black cherry pâte de fruit, dried marjoram, clove and singed orange peel. Accents of mineral, spice and herb linger on the finish. Drink now through 2025."

We would suggest pairing this "Bad Larry" with a traditional Grigliata Mista di Carne (Mixed Grilled Meats) much like the ones that you might be served at the Buglioni family restaurant "Osteria del Bugiardo" or many of the other finer Cantinas in and around the city of Verona. Other pairings suggestions would include braised short ribs or Osso Buco, along rich pasta or risotto entrees will also be complimented very nicely with this very special treat of a wine.
