The greatest secret to finding outstanding wines with great price-to-quality ratios is a willingness to veer a bit off the beaten path. By venturing just outside of a premier wine region or eschewing a rock star vintage that gets all the press for a very good vintage that lives in it shadows, you will drink extremely well while staying within budget. Both of these strategies were employed in the acquisition of today's Six-Pack Special, the 2012 Château Larose-Trintaudon Haut-Médoc. This is special occasion wine coming in at $18 per bottle. Not too shabby!

Château Larose-Trintaudon is one of the largest estates in the Haut-Médoc, with 165 hectares of vineyards. Located just a stone's throw away from the revered AOC of Pauillac, which is home to numerous "classified growth" estates and produces some the most expensive and sought-after Cabernet-based wines in the world, Larose-Trintaudon enjoys a very similar terroir, characterized by an oceanic climate and soils of gravel, clay and limestone. The very good 2012 vintage brought forth some pretty terrific wines while the 2010 was getting all the mad love - and resulting high prices - from the press.

Today's wine is the shy wallflower that really deserves to emerge from the shadows of its neighbors and shine!! A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, it has aromas of red fruits that follow through on the palate, along with blackcurrants, leather, cedar and spices. The oak is not overdone and is perfectly balanced with the wine's fruit characters. It is medium-to-full-bodied, with good tannic structure and a long finish. Check out the press!

91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"One of the largest estates in the Médoc, this misses being in Pauillac by being—literally—on the wrong side of the rail tracks. Regardless, the location ultimately gives the wine depth and richness. It's ripe, dark, dense and very structured, showing the new wood that will integrate. Drink from 2018." (May 1, 2015)

90 points, James Suckling:
"This shows a subtle fruit character with cherries and strawberries plus hints of vanilla. Rose petal, too. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish." (February 23, 2015)

This Bordeaux beauty will trick your palate into believing that you paid a pretty penny for it. Your wallet will know better - a WIN WIN. CHEERS!
