I love many different styles of wine from all over the world, but the red wines of Rioja are my absolute favorites, especially those crafted in the "Old World", traditional style. Made primarily with the oak-friendly Tempranillo grape and barrel-aged in American or French casks, these wines beguile the senses with a plethora of well-integrated yet distinct characters - red and black fruits, sweet baking spice, vanilla, cocoa and toast all come together to dance subtly yet unforgettably on the palate. Riojas are powerful and well-structured, yet elegant and refined, delicious in their youth yet age-worthy, complex yet approachable. Anyone, no matter their level of wine knowledge, can enjoy a good Rioja. The best ones usually cost upwards of $25 per bottle; truly authentic, Old World Riojas priced for everyday enjoyment are pretty are. That's why I have already jumped on today's Six-Pack Special, the 2012 Bodegas Beronia Rioja Reserva. This wine is the REAL DEAL, PEOPLE - and it's a RESERVA for under $15/bottle!

Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of food-and-wine-loving friends from the Basque country whose passion for all things Rioja led them to establish a winery specializing in Reserva and Gran Reserva style wines. The winery was integrated into the González Byass Family Wine group in 1982 and began an expansion into international markets. Today, Beronia is one of the most renowned wineries in Rioja, producing pure and traditional wines with their own personality and Beronia style. Bodegas Beronia is situated in the village of Ollauri, in the heart of Rioja Alta. The area has a number of different micro-climates depending on the orientation of the vineyard and the protection from the winds from the Ebro valley. The soils have a balanced structure of sand, sediments and clay, with low alkalinity and little organic material, making them ideal for the production of quality wines. (winery notes)

Today's wine epitomizes traditional Rioja. Intense ruby in the glass, it displays aromas of candied red fruits, with cherries, strawberries and raspberries dominating the palate. Accents of dark mocha, vanilla and sweet baking spices provide depth, while balanced acidity and silky tannins lead into an amazing finish.

Decanter Magazine gave it 90 points: "Dark fruit aromas lead into quite a fleshy, baked strawberry and raspberry palate. Aging in mixed oak barrels for 20 months has lent precise wood and spice notes, which continue onto the finish alongside juicy cherry and hedgerow fruit flavors." (February 12, 2017)

Stock up on a six-pack or two of this beautiful Rioja and enjoy special occasion-worthy wine any night of the week. PRO TIP: Rioja will ROCK your Thanksgiving meal. Cheers!
