Tuscany is definitely the most well-known region in Italy for serious, collectible red wines made from French varietals, but it is not by any means the only game in town. Enter Campania in the south, home of the venerable and age-worthy Taurasi wines. Not to be outdone by its northern neighbor, Campania has had its way with noble international grape varietals - and the results have been nothing less than stunning. Today's Buy the Pair, the 2013 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGP, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Aglianico, is a lush, multi-layered, mouthful of a wine that has earned the moniker "Super Campanian" in my book!

Montevetrano is a small vineyard in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Campania native Silvia Imparato indulged in wine as a hobby until she decided to rebuild her family’s vineyards in Montevetrano. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella; together they have created an outstanding, iconic wine named after its place of origin. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar that was built in 2000. (importer notes)

The 2013 Montevetrano di Silvia Imparato Colli di Salerno IGP is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak for one year, followed by 6 months of bottle aging. It is full-bodied and redolent of black fruits, with layers of tobacco, spice, saddle leather and licorice, supple tannins and a silky mouthfeel. This is a wine worthy of a special occasion dinner or a spot in your cellar among the other majestic wines of Italy. Check out the press!

93 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine
"Intense aromas of red-skinned berry, fragrant blue flower, Oriental spice and a whiff of graphite take center stage. The taut, chewy palate doles out Marasca cherry, blackberry, anise, mocha and a peppery note alongside bright acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins." (March 1, 2016)

92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"This blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 30% Aglianico starts off slowly but it does reach full speed with a few quick swirls of the glass. Some 30,000 bottles were made. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with thick concentration of dark pigments. The bouquet needs a little patience before it shows a complete bouquet of rose, spice, dark chocolate and dried blackberry aromas." (August 31, 2017)

92 points, Wine Spectator
"Coffee and spice notes underscore this rich, chewy red, accenting flavors of crushed black currant and wild cherry fruit, smoky mineral and star anise, with a hint of cocoa. This is sleek and finely meshed, with a grippy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Aglianico and Merlot. Drink now through 2026. 2,100 cases made." (February 29, 2016)

91 points, James Suckling
"A red with lots of rich fruit with brick and stone undertones. Full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Big, structured wine but a little rustic. Better in 2016." (November 18, 2015)

Only 2100 cases of this beautiful wine were made in 2013. We were lucky to get our hands on a precious few. Make sure you do the same; you will not be sorry. CHEERS!
