Today's Six-Pack Special, the 2012 Signal Ridge Brut Sparkling Wine, reminds me to be thankful for the pioneering winemakers who had the vision and guts to think outside of the box, stake their claim on uncharted territory and establish new wine destinations. Because of them, we now have a much wider variety of wines from which to choose, and we do not have to shell out beaucoup bucks to enjoy top-notch juice. Today's feature is proof-positive that there are places beyond Champagne ideally suited for the cultivation of cool-climate grapes that bring forth captivating, mind-blowingly good bubbles at reasonable prices (especially when purchased at Bin Ends)!

Winemaker Roger Scommegna envisioned an American sparkling wine that honored the tradition of its Old World predecessors while maintaining an authentic and distinct sense of place. In 1999, he found the perfect location for his wines 2642 feet above sea level, on Cold Spring Mountain. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Anderson Valley, the vineyards here enjoy abundant sunshine tempered by cool ocean breezes, as well as a rough, challenging terrain that makes the vines dig deep for hydration and nutrients (hard-working vines make delicious grapes!). The wide variation in day-to-night temperatures ensures that the grapes achieve the perfect balance between ripe fruit characters and balancing acidity. These conditions of terroir bring forth some of the best bubbles this side of the Atlantic, as evidenced by today's feature.

The 2012 Signal Ridge Brut, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, has aromas and flavors of lemon peel, tangerine, apricot, and peach preserves; accents of brioche on the almost creamy mid-palate and a crisp minerality on the long, dry finish lend balance and complexity. Check out the press!

"This is a beautifully balanced and well-rounded wine that has light spicy aromas and generous fruit flavors. Made from nearly equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the mouth-filling texture boasts tiny bubbles, good acidity, and excellent fruit concentration." (11/1/17)

If you like good bubbles like I like good bubbles, do what I did and stock up on this ridiculously priced and insanely good beauty. CHEERS!
