Yes, Summer dining tends to be more casual than in the warmer months, but it can't be all burgers, steaks and hot dogs off the grill, amiright? Sometimes the occasion calls for lighter fare, and when we are in the mood to cook a memorable meal, we need a wine that will match the occasion, one that is just as exceptional as the meal itself. It's an added bonus when that wine is priced for stocking up, so that is exactly what I did with today's Six-Pack Special, the 2017 Averaen "Tunkalilla Vineyard" Riesling!

Baron Ziegler, an old friend of ours, got his start in the wine industry here in Boston. After a few years working in the trade, he set his sights on establishing his own operation. Years of planning and hard work led to the establishment of Banshee Winery, where he, along with his business partners, released some of the most elegant, terroir-driven Pinots and Chardonnays we had ever had the pleasure of drinking. His wine wanderlust led him to the Willamette Valley, where the volcanic and marine sedimentary soils and the cooling winds from the Pacific Ocean are ideally suited for cool-climate varietals. An idea was hatched, and another winery was born. Today's offer is one of the wondrous fruits of this endeavor.

Averaen Riesling is sourced entirely from the Tunkalilla Vineyard, a tiny specialist Riesling vineyard perched on the southern facing end escarpment of the Eola-Amity Hills, planted in volcanic Jory soils, just above the Missoula floodline at 600 feet elevation. The grapes enjoy a long growing season, with great sun exposure and cooling breezes. They are harvested at the very early stages of botrytis* development (from winery notes). The wine is ever-so-slightly off-dry, with beautiful floral aromas and a palate bursting with ripe apples, juicy melon, peach and citrus fruits, with threads of stony minerality and hints of savory herbs weaving their way among all that generous fruit.

Pair this wine with all manner of seafood dishes, Chinese, Japanese and Indian foods. Enjoy it on a warm, sunny day sans cuisine. Whatever you do, make sure you stock up on this age-worthy-yet- delicious-right-now Riesling. It just may be the hit of the season. CHEERS!
12.8% Alcohol
*Botrytis a fungus (it's a good thing!) that forms a grayish powdery mold on a variety of organic matter, including grapes. It is deliberately cultivated (as noble rot) on the grapes used for certain wines.
