Those of you who shop regularly at our Braintree store might have heard me say that I love wines made from grapes grown near volcanoes. Relatively rare and somewhat obscure, volcanic wines are gaining popularity for their beautifully-integrated fruit and terroir-driven characters. And that terroir! Volcanic soils have porous ash in abundance; it allows the vines' roots to absorb more water, which brings forth ripe grapes and exuberant fruit in the finished wine. Few varietals can survive in a volcanic environment; only those that have a long history with the soil can do so. They not only survive; they thrive and know how to exploit the soil's gifts to create layers of mineral-influenced traits such as flint, crushed stones, and saline that add depth and complexity. Sound expensive? Very often it is, but not today; enjoy all this abundance on a budget with today's Six-Pack Special, the 2016 Cantina di Venosa "Verbo" Aglianico del Vulture!

Sandwiched between Campania and Puglia, in the arch of the boot, lies the region of Basilicata and home of the Vulture viticultural zone. Aglianico, the star of today's feature, has a history here dating thousands of years. It thrives in the area's high temperatures, abundant sunshine, and of course that volcanic soil. Tailor-made for the area, it brings forth wines that are full-bodied, loaded with fruit, savory/earthy notes, and grippy tannins.

The "Verbo" is everything I want in a volcanic wine - except for the high price. It is medium-to-full-bodied, heady and intense, with licorice, pepper, leather, baking spices and wet stone unfolding layer by layer among dominant flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, and cassis. Balanced acidity and firm tannins provide structure and bring the wine to a long and satisfying finish. This wine will be perfect with Italian food as well as any meat cooked on the grill, but if you and your guests decide to enjoy a glass before dinner, be prepared to keep a second bottle on deck. That first bottle will be sure to disappear well before the meal is ready.
