Riserva is the designation given to the highest expression of Chianti Classico. Wines that bear this label are typically made from an estate's finest grapes. They must be aged for a minimum of two years in oak, with an additional 3 months in the bottle before being released into the market. They are more complex and age-worthy than their non-riserva counterparts and usually have the splurge-level pricing to match. Not today, though! Pull the trigger on our absolutely palate-blowing Three-Pack Special, the 2013 Vignamaggio "Gherardino" Chianti Classico Riserva, without breaking the blank!

Vignamaggio is one of Tuscany’s oldest wineries, with a history dating back to the 14th century. Located in Greve, right in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, it became famous as the childhood home of the famous Monna Lisa Gherardini, the “Gioconda” painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Throughout the centuries, the estate had several owners and went through extensive restorations. Over the last 30 years, the vineyards have been revitalized and the winemaking facilities and cellars have been modernized. The vineyards, situated at an average altitude of 350 meters and predominantly southwest and east facing, extend over 62 hectares and are in the process of being converted to organic agriculture. Yearly production is approximately 300,000 bottles. (winery notes)

The "Gherardino" is named for the the noble family that founded Vignamaggio in the 1300’s. It is lushly-textured and offers generous fruit characters, thanks in part to the inclusion of 20% Merlot into the final blend. Check out the press!

92 Points, Vinous
“Dark red cherries, cedar, leather and licorice meld together in the 2013 Chianti Classico Gherardino. Pliant and expressive, the Gherardino could use another year or two in bottle to shed some of its baby fat. This is another impressive showing from Vignamaggio.” (September 2015)

90 Points, James Suckling
“A tangy and bright wine with blueberry, hints of mineral, and spice. Medium to full body, good acidity. Lively finish. Very fine and delicate tannins.” (October 2015)

The "Gherardino" is drinking beautifully now and will continue to evolve in the cellar for several years. It is great on its own but will elevate any meal, from pizza to pasta to roast chicken to flank steak and beyond. CHEERS!
