Pinot Noir is one of the most difficult, high-maintenance grapes to cultivate; in an ironic twist of nature, it seems that the more unforgiving the terrain, the more likely it is to thrive. Such is the case with the Sonoma Coast AVA. Its rugged topography, characterized by steep, windswept hills, works in conjunction with the area's cool climate, fog and Pacific Ocean breezes to make some of the most transcendent Pinot Noirs available this side of The Pond. Factor in some talented winemakers who are passionate about Pinot and you've got an absolutely irresistible Three-Pack Special, the 2013 Red Car Pinot Noir.

The people behind Red Car winery are hands-on farmers, part of a small cadre of wineries in the region who feel fortunate to grow fruit in this challenging but ultimately rewarding part of Sonoma. For several years they have worked hard to go beyond sustainability and have integrated organic and bio-dynamic principles into their farming as they search for nature’s ideal pathways and bring forth wines that are honest and pure expressions of place. They believe that wine is important because it connects us to nature, and that the winemaker must stand aside and allow that place to transmit its story without manipulation. Today's wine is the delicious embodiment of the Red Car philosophy. Made from fruit sourced from several vineyards throughout the Sonoma Coast AVA, fermented with native yeasts and aged in oak barrels (90% neutral & 10% new), it is medium-bodied, aromatic and elegant, displaying gorgeous notes of violets and dried red cherries. Its moderate alcohol, soft tannins and high acidity make it suitable for enjoyment with or without food, now or after a few years of cellar aging. Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave it 91 points: "This wine draws from a handful of tremendous vineyard sites, including the producer's estate, Platt and Clary Ranch, all cool-climate and windswept. It's a tight, light and minimally messed-with wine, bright in cherry, pomegranate and rose. (February 1, 2016)
