For red wine lovers, there is nothing more hedonistic and decadent than Amarone. This Queen of the Veneto is crafted from grapes that are dried until they are almost raisins before fermentation and transformation into wine. High in alcohol, richly-textured and loaded with dark, brooding fruit characters, Amarone is a luxurious treat for the palate - but costing upwards of $50 per bottle, Amarone is, for most of us, reserved for very special occasions. What's an Amarone enthusiast on a budget to do? Stock up on today's Six-Pack Special, the 2016 Gran Passione Rosso Appassimento from the Veneto, which fits the bill perfectly!

The Gran Passione, a blend of Corvina and Merlot, is crafted in the tradition of “Apassimento” (to dry and shrivel), the same style as Amarone wines of the region. This technique has its roots in an ancient past dating back to the Roman era. Over the centuries, this technique of “drying” the grapes before crushing has been honed, resulting in this unique expression of northern Italy. The grapes are hand-selected and harvested at the beginning of October to achieve the highest sugar content. After drying on the vines for about 15 days, they are pressed and the fermentation starts; the skins are left in the must for a period to extract and intensify the flavors. The wine is then staged in oak vats for about 3 or 4 months;* this restrained use of oak adds complexity without making it too heavy, and all those generous fruit characters take center stage on the palate.

The 2017 Gran Passione Rosso Appassimento is a medium-to-full-bodied pleasure bomb with aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberry, plum and black cherry and accents of vanilla and baking spice on the palate. The tannins are soft but the wine is well-structured, with bright acidity winding its way around the fruit and bringing it to a long and satisfying finish. Its quality and richness will fool you into thinking that you blew your budget; you may have to check your receipt to remind yourself that this beauty costs only $9.80 per bottle. CHEERS!
