The Vidigueira Cooperative, founded in 1960, was created to protect the vineyards, the indigenous varietals, and the agricultural economy of Alentejo while elevating the quality of the wines and bringing more renown to the region.

Alentejo is a large geographical area in Portugal located south of the Tejo River that encompasses about 30% of the country's landmass. Its growing season is, for the most part, hot and dry, but its diversity of soils and terrain make it hospitable to many grape varietals. Alentejo received DOC status in 2003, thus enhancing the region's reputation as a producer of high-quality wines.
